About WomenShelter of Long Beach

We are the oldest agency in Long Beach serving victims of domestic violence.   Since 1977, we have helped our clients overcome the pain of physical and emotional abuse and move on to a healthy and productive life for themselves and their children.

  

Purpose:         

The mission of WomenShelter of Long Beach is to help end the cycle of domestic violence through education, intervention and prevention.  WomenShelter asists victims and their children to transition to a secure, permanent living situation free from the trauma of violence by providing safe shelter and supportive services to victims of family abuse.

 

 

Established:   

 WomenShelter of Long Beach has been serving the community since 1977.

 

Programs/Services

24-Hour Crisis Line: Trained advocates can answer questions, provide information and referrals, offer shelter and conduct intakes.

        

Emergency Shelter – An 8-bedroom, 29-bed facility provides 30-45 days of safe,  emergency shelter for domestic violence victims and their children.

                       

Domestic Violence Resource Center – Located at 930 Pacific Avenue in Long  Beach, the Center offers non-sheltered victims a variety of services, including counseling, legal advocacy, case management, group counseling, social services and emergency food and clothing.

 

DART (Domestic Abuse Response Team) –Trained WomenShelter advocates responds to to 9-1-1 calls at the scene of domestic violence incidents, and work with police detectives to assist the victim and offer services.

 

Impact:            

Year-round, WomenShelter generally runs at full capacity, sheltering approximately 250 victims and their children.

 

Our 24-Hour Crisis Line responds to approximately 3,000 calls annually.

 

The Domestic Violence Resource Center assists approximately 250 families each year.

 

DART counselors respond to approximately 15 calls per month.

 

Clients:           

The client population of both the Shelter and Resource Center are from all walks of life and all economic levels.  Many are immigrants who do not speak English.  Approximately 60 percent are Latino, 15 percent African American, 15 Caucasian, and 10 percent Asian. Although most clients are unemployed, some have jobs. We welcome male victimsl, and we serve all age groups.

 

Staff:               

WomenShelter of Long Beach employs 42 full- and part-time staff, including counselors, a licensed clinician, and an executive director.

 

 

Volunteers:    

Volunteers are used in many areas of the organization. Those volunteers who complete the 40-hour, state-mandated training can work directly with clients, including on the crisis line, working with children, or co-facilitating groups. Contact us for volunteer trainings and opportunities.

 

Funding:        

WomenShelter of Long Beach receives more than 80 percent of our operational funding from government sources including the County of Los Angeles, Office of Emergency Services, Department of Mental Health, State of California and City of Long Beach.  With recent budget cuts, the facility is depending more on individual and group contributions, private foundation grants, and fund-raising events.
